Nostalgic reboots, Tekken anime and Umbrella Academy's next instalment finally announced!
It’s a good time to be a ’90s comics fan, and Venom: Lethal Protector #1 is proof of that. Venom has grown and changed a heck of a lot in the last few years as a character, but you know everyone misses the brain-eating vigilante who saves petty crime victims by eating the assailants. There’s a twisted edge to the character that’s unmistakable, and that edge is prevalent in this new series, a welcomed return to the symbiote we all love!

If there’s one area Marvel consistently dominates in, it’s nostalgia comics. On top of this week's Venom: Lethal Protector, case in point we also have Wolverine: Patch. The Patch era of Wolverine focused on Wolverine solving crimes and fighting gangs in Madripoor, but it was a shorter era for the character.Essentially there’s a James Bond look and feel to the story. After we are introduced to some shady-looking characters who want Wolverine to investigate suspicious activity in the mountains, the story quickly gets right to it and Logan in a suit is something I will always advocate…for…research purposes…
When Rita Repulsa uses an ancient artefact to transport herself to a universe without Power Rangers, she finds instead with aliens, kaiju and...Godzilla! Hoping to annihilate this new foe (sit back down Rita, he’s the King of Monsters), Rita hurls her own terrible creatures into battle. But she never expects that the Rangers have followed her to this alternate reality, pitting the Dinozords themselves head-to-head with the my favourite reptile! Godzilla Vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is the cross over we didn't know we needed but it makes total sense!
Instead of focusing on the throwbacks, let's take a look at something more futuristic…. Armorclads is set in a different solar system, advanced mechs known as Armorclads are used to fight wars and build worlds. On Xeru, genetically engineered workers live out their short lives mining a valuable mineral called The Pure in construction-class mechs known as Ironclads. When one of their own is killed, the Ironclads’ world is turned upside down and they defy their oppressors. Along the way, they’ll discover they’re embroiled in a mystery dating back centuries that could change the world forever—as long as they band together.
I feel like we aren’t seeing any new movies drop this week because the film world is still reeling from The Batman - if you haven't already you can check out our spoiler free review here. However we have had some exciting announcements in the form of the new The Exorcist. Halloween director David Gordon Green will be helming the new Exorcist trilogy, which will also find Ellen Burstyn reprising her Academy-nominated role of Chris MacNeil. It was announced that the first instalment of this new Exorcist trilogy will be released on October 13, 2023. With all the horror movie reboots lately, what do you think of this one?
Umbrella Academy Season 3 finally has a release date of June 22! I may have mentioned once or twice in my comic book reviews that I am kind of a fan of anything Gerard Way has put his hands to and Umbrella Academy is included! Having saved the world from the apocalypse (again), the ‘family’ find themselves in a 2019 timeline where Reginald Hargreaves and Ben are still alive and this new band of superheroes has been rebranded The Sparrow Academy. This series follows some of the arc from the Hotel Oblivion storyline which I would recommend reading before this new season drops to fully enjoy the story, and because it’s awesome!
Netflix have also dropped another surprise announcement - Tekken: Bloodline is an animated series following Jin Kazama on his quest for revenge for his murdered family which inevitably takes him to the King of Iron Fist tournament . I still don't trust live action adaptations of video games so I am really glad they have gone anime style with this and I am looking forward to the release!
Speaking of video games, I spotted the exciting news that CD PROJEKT RED have announced a new The Witcher game in development, clearly following the success of the Netflix series and the third game being so revolutionary for the franchise.
I also fell across a dazzling new game titled A Memoir Blue, this emotional storyline follows a young champion swimmer who embarks on a dream-like journey through her rocky childhood, reflecting on her complicated relationship with her mother. A Memoir Blue is an interactive poem that unfolds through a series of vignettes and you can watch the gorgeous trailer here.
How are you finding 2022’s releases so far ? Do you think these releases are being overshadowed by The Batman or are there any releases you have been more excited for?
