We’ve all been there. We fancy a movie but have no idea what to watch. Netflix offers us so much choice that we don’t even know where to start, and then, after nearly an hour of scrolling, we eventually just call it quits and go to bed. And with the horror genre so oversaturated with generic jumpscares and overdone cliches, it's even harder finding a good scary movie right off the bat. So to save you a wasted evening, we’ve cobbled together a small handful of some of our favourite Netflix horrors. So grab your snacks and be sure to bring a blanket - you’re going to need something to hide under!
It's 1905 and a typical prodigal son, named Thomas Richardson, returns to his home in London. However, Richardson discovers that his sister has fallen prey to an extreme religious cult. As she is held to ransom, Richardson travels to the cult’s island dwelling in an effort to bring his beloved sister home. It’s here that he bears witness to the horrifying practices the cult have adopted under the guise of righteousness. A deep, disturbing dive into the dark rabbit hole of religious abuse, Apostle plays mind games that are guaranteed to make you squirm. Proceed with caution; this one doesn’t hold back.
In an adaptation of Stephen King’s novella of the same name, Netflix brings us the tremendously chilling tale of 1922. Arlette, the wife of a Nebraskan farmer, seals her fate when she insists on selling her husband's land. Unwilling to bend to wife’s wishes, her husband, Wilfred, conspires to murder Arlette for financial gain and makes the twisted decision of dragging his own son, Henry, into the sordid plot. When the hideous deed is done, the two attempt to continue on with their lives. However, the more time passes, the more the murdering father-son duo start to feel their own sanity slipping. Written and directed by Zak Hilditch, this is the kind of movie that will have you constantly checking over your shoulder
Civilisation is brought to the brink of destruction by a sinister entity. Embodying the worst fear of whoever happens to be looking at it, the appearance of this strange and sinister force always has one inevitable outcome: if you see it, you die. With the human population rapidly dwindling, a mother and her two children strike out on a dangerous search for a rumoured safe haven. To ensure their safe passage, the family must complete their journey blindfolded. Playing on one of humankind’s most basic fears, Bird Box is sure to have you wincing from its suspenseful atmosphere alone.
Wrapping up with another Stephen King classic, Gerald’s Game tells the grim tale of a romantic getaway gone wrong. Retreating to their remote lake house in Western Maine, Gerald and Carla hope to reignite the flame of their failing marriage. However, things go horribly awry when Carla accidentally kills her husband in a moment of panic after being unwillingly pressured into Gerald’s kinky game. Handcuffed to the bedpost with her husband's corpse at the foot of the bed, no one in the secluded neighbourhood can hear her scream. This intense psychological thriller is sure to make your skin crawl - but I’ll bet you won’t be able to look away.
