Lesbian Nuns or Revenge Seeking Vikings? Or Both!
April is full steam ahead and we are just waiting for the sunshine to properly return now! If you are not ready to trust the British weather and venture out into the cold yet, here’s some little rays of sunshine to wrap up indoors too!
It seems to be a week of horror tales in the comic book world, let's kick off with …
DC: Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #1 which is designed to welcome new readers into one of the greatest worlds in DC’s library. The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country is a terrifying travelogue through a nation that's recognisable but obscene.
Sometimes, nightmares walk the Earth. Every night when you sleep, the Lord of Dreams chooses the path you’ll follow, into an Elysium, or down the hallways of your darkest fears. And sometimes, if it is Dream’s will, those nightmares escape those halls, and go out into the world…
Image Comics brings us A Town Called Terror #1 and a story following Henry West who is brutally kidnapped in the middle of the night by a spectral being whilst his wife Julie watches. Henry awakens to the reality of his whereabouts, but Julie, with no evidence of the phantom crime, is unable to get help to search for him. I mean, who would believe her anyway?
Dark Beach #1 is one of those stories that could happen in our lifetime, but likely won’t. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, this saga is set in a not too distant yet possible future.. Basically, the Earth has been knocked out of orbit and is now drifting away from the Sun. In a strange bit of science, the world isn’t completely frozen over and there’s artificial light beamed from space. Yet the world keeps spinning and Gordo, our main character who sneaks photos of crime scenes before the police get there, stumbles across a strange scene and decides to investigate this mysterious death.
My final recommendation this week is Grimm Universe Presents: Quarterly: Dracula's Daughter named Charlotte, who is on a quest to find her notorious father. The only problem is, he’s lost in the Underworld, cast there by her half-sister, the legendary vampire hunter Liesel Van Helsing.
What she finds along the way may be more than she asked for. Don’t miss this shocking tale of one of the Grimm Universe’s deadliest villains as the terrible past of Dracula’s Daughter is finally revealed, one of my favourite horror comics this week for sure!
There are two movies out this week that peaked my interest - both couldn't be more opposite ends of the spectrum! Benedetta is a nun living in 17th-century Italy who suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair, even the trailer makes me blush!
Now The Northman seems tame! Based on the legend of Amleth (the inspiration for William Shakespears Hamlet, The Northman is an epic revenge thriller, that explores how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father
But a lot of the talk this week is obviously around the trailer drop of Stranger Things 4 , firstly - what a soundtrack. This series looks to be a lot more mature, we are almost growing up with these characters and things are definitely getting darker. It seems new battles and foes are rearing their demonic heads, I am excited to see how the gang face this next level!
Now if anyone has ever told you dreams can’t come true, tell them I said to suck it! Because Nintendo Switch (and Steam) just released Cat Cafe Manager … ok my dreams are quite small…but it is SO cute!
Nintendo and Steam also released Road 96 this week, which reminded me heavily of the Telltale games with its approach to choice and consequences as well as art style. The premise being that you head north in an attempt to cross the border and escape the fictional country of Petria. Set in the nineties but seemingly inspired by Trump’s America, Petria is a nation divided, and thus the people you meet sit on varying points on the political spectrum making for dramatic and sometimes terrifying moments. A little close to home? Maybe, but this game looks so enticing to play.
If you don’t own a Switch, released across all platforms this week was Nobody Saves the World. A game where Nobody...is actually a somebody who wakes up with no memories but does have a magic wand. Excitingly, it's a couch co-op which means I'll probably pick this up with the anticipation of playing with my real world friends, but I'll actually probably play it alone…
Do you enjoy the Telltale games or do you prefer more open world adventures? Drop me a comment with your favourite release this week!
